The Abortion Debate

Pro-Choice Side

A woman has the right to privacy over her own body.  No man should ever take that away.  What happens in a clinic is solely the business of a woman and her doctor.

Just what are these Anti-Abortionists trying to prove, anyway?  They distort the truth and tug at our emotions.  They show ghastly photos of dead babies in buckets and try to make the Pro-Choice side look like heartless butchers.

An abortion is a safe and simple medical procedure that doesn't murder a baby.  It merely puts an end to an unwanted pregnancy.

  • The fetus is just part of the pregnant woman's body, like her tonsils or appendix.
  • The preborn is a simple blob of tissue.  So abortion is terminating a pregnancy, not killing a baby.
  • The fetus is a potential human being, not an actual one; it's like a blueprint, not a house.
  • Life begins at birth.  That's why we celebrate birthdays, not conception days.
  • Reproductive freedom is a basic right.  Therefore, every woman should have control over her own body and have the right to choose.
  • If abortion is made illegal, thousands of women will lose their life to "rusty clothes hangers" in back alleys.
  • The preborn isn't a person with meaningful life.  It can't even think and is less advanced than an animal.
  • It's unfair to bring an unwanted child into this world.  He or she will probably end up abused.

What about a woman whose preborn baby is diagnosed as deformed or handicapped?  What about a woman who is pregnant due to rape or incest?  Isn't it more cruel to force her to have the baby than to end the pregnancy . . . and erase the horrible memory?  The radical minority that calls itself Pro-Life can't shove its beliefs down our throats.  And we can't let those people step all over our right to free choice.

Pro-Life Side

My opponent bombarded us with point after point about women's rights and free choice.  But they completely missed what's really at stake:  a living, breathing, functioning HUMAN LIFE.

Pro-Abortionists blast Pro-Lifers for showing photos of dead babies in buckets, claiming we're distorting fact with cheap theatrics.

But truth is truth.  Abortion amounts to discarded dead babies.

  • A fetus is NOT just another part of a woman's body.  A body part is defined by the common genetic code it shares with the rest of the body.  The preborn's genetic code differs from his or her mother's.  Some preborn children are male, while their mom's are female.
  • A preborn human is NOT just a blob of tissue.  From the moment of conception, the preborn is a LIVING human being.
  • A fetus is NOT just a blueprint or a "potential human."  A fetus is a person at a particular stage of development---much like a toddler or adolescent.  The fact is, something that is nonhuman does NOT become human by getting older and bigger.
  • Life does NOT begin at birth.  Science has shown us that human life begins at conception.  All genetic characteristics of a distinct individual are present from teh moment of conception.  Our recognition of birthdays is cultural, not scientific.
  • Restricting abortion does NOT step all over a woman's "rights and freedoms."  If anything, it ensures the rights and freedoms of the preborn.  The ONE-TIME CHOICE of abortion ROBS someone else of a LIFETIME OF CHOICES.  Furthermore, responsible societies must restrict choices that would harm others.
  • If abortion is made illegal, tens of thousands of women will NOT die from rusty clothes hangers.  Prior to its legalization, 90% of abortions were done by physicians in their offices, not in back alleys.  In fact, women in America still die from legal abortions.
  • The early stage of human life IS as meaningful as any other stage.  But if we listened to Pro-Abortionists who base human value on size and intelligence, then we'd also have to dehumanize other members of society:  dwarves, the menally handicapped, etc.
  • Since human life IS valuable, every human IS wanted.  A pregnancy may be "unwanted", but there is not such thing as an unwanted child.  The list of couples wanting to adopt runs into the millions.  And if we exclude all human beings whom we believe are "unwanted", then any segment of society is at risk:  AIDS victims, the elderly, the homeless, etc.

Using phrases like "terminating a pregnancy" may sound better, but the fact is abortion IS deadly.  EVERY abortion stops a beating heart and terminates measurable brain waves.  Americans kill nearly 1 million preborn babies a year through abortion.  That's more than 2,700 a day or one about every 30 seconds.

Hitler killed 6 million Jews, but since 1973, Americans have exterminated more than 44 million preborn babies.  Try to keep in mind that EACH ONE was a HUMAN LIFE that was TAKEN AWAY.  Try to picture 44 million dead.  No matter what some believe, the truth is, abortion kills---and that's wrong.

Abortion has killed more people then Adolph Hitler killed during the Holocaust of World War II.

A Girl's Story  (Fictional)

The story below is from the Student's Life Application Study Bible (New Living Translation, Second Edition).  The "Fair Use" Law allows us to use it to teach and inform without violating copyright laws.

"Sarah, maybe you made a mistake---or maybe the test is wrong."

"I don't think so . . . . Oh, Kris, what am I gonna do?"  The tears began to roll down Sarah's face.  "I'm pregnant!"

Kris hugs her friend.  "Look, don't panic.  Everything's gonna work out.  My sister will help us.  She knows about this clinic.  The doctors are good, and nobody else has to find out."

Sarah is shocked, "You mean an abortion?"

"Well, do you have a better idea?  C'mon, Sarah, your only 17.  What are you gonna do with a kid?  And what would you tell your mom?"

"I don't know . . . I'm so confused."  Sarah sighs, wiping her eyes on her sleeve.  "What would you do?  I mean, could you kill your own baby?"

"What do you mean, 'kill'?  It's just a bunch of cells!  It's not a person yet.  If you were six or seven months pregnant, I'd tell you not to do it.  But your probably only five weeks along.  I don't see what else you can do."

"You really think it's right?"

"Well, let's just say I don't think it's wrong."

Sarah sighs again, "Well, how soon can you call your sister?"

Kris picks up the phone, "I bet she's at her dorm right now."

Is abortion really the safe route?  When do you think life begins?  To gain some perspective on this issue, see Psalm 139:13-18.

"You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb.  Thank You for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous---how well I know it.  You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.  You saw me before I was born.  Every day of my life was recorded in Your book.  Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.  How precious are Your thoughts about me, O God.  They cannot be numbered!  I can't even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand!  And when I wake up, You are still with me!"

Abortion:  The Death of Freedom

The "Fair Use" law allows us to use this article to teach and inform without violating copyright laws.

by Paul Kokoski (http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/feedback/106760-0/)

Biology clearly tells us that full human life begins at conception with the formation of a genetically complete, self-directing human entity, the embryo. This was established 120 years ago by Wilhelm His, the father of human embryology. Major theologians also agree that it is at the instant of conception that a person acquires his or her soul.

Procured abortion then is the deliberate and direct killing, by whatever means it is carried out, of a human being in the initial phase of his or her existence, extending from conception to birth.

Today, in many people's consciences, the perception of the gravity of abortion has become progressively obscured. The acceptance of abortion in the popular mind, in behaviour and even in law itself, is a telling sign of an extremely dangerous crisis of the moral sense, which is becoming more and more incapable of distinguishing between good and evil, even when the fundamental right to life is at stake. The moral gravity of procured abortion is apparent in all its truth if we recognize that we are dealing with murder. Given such a grave situation, we need now more than ever to have the courage to look the truth in the eye and to call things by their proper name, without yielding to convenient compromises or to the temptation of self-deception.

The media often manipulates language to hide the tragic reality of the facts. For example, abortion is called 'voluntary interruption of pregnancy' and not the killing of a defenseless human being, an abortion clinic is given a harmless, even attractive, name: 'centre for reproductive health'.

On a superficial level, we may be convinced that legalized abortion has not changed much in our private lives and in our society. It all takes place in the silence of an operating room, which ensures the woman's safety. It is as if the fetus has never existed. But there are no small murders.

The respect for every human life is an essential condition if a societal life worthy of the name is to be possible. When man’s conscience loses respect for life as something sacred, he inevitably ends by losing his own identity.

While the slogan that abortion is a woman's right to control her own body may sound reasonable to many, it is a medical fact that the human fetus is not a part of the mother’s body. It is a separate, distinct and unique human person with its own heart beat, brain waves and DNA.

Ultimately, those who support abortion cannot coherently answer the question why the right of the fetus not to be killed must yield to the right of individual freedom. When the law accepts that the rights of the weakest may be violated, it also accepts that the law of the jungle prevails over the rule of law. When we begin to call even an embryonic human being a "thing", a "clump of cells", progress becomes blind and destructive.

Partial-birth abortion, is usually performed in the final stages of pregnancy. The child is delivered through his mother's birth canal, but backwards, until only his head remains inside. The abortionist then pierces the living baby's skull (usually without first administering anesthesia), suctions out his brain, and then collapses his skull so that the baby can be extracted intact. While some pro-abortion groups claim that it is necessary to keep the procedure legal for women who's lives or health are in danger, most doctors agree that it is never medically necessary.

Abortion violates every human instinct. It contradicts the 4th century BC Hippocratic oath that says "I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy." Let us not change what our most ancient ancestors knew with simplistic certainty - that abortion is evil.

Freedom does not rest in one’s ability to do as one pleases. "Ye shall be as gods." This promise is quite clearly behind modernity's radical demand for freedom. Such anarchical freedom does not redeem, but makes man a miscarried creature, a pointless being. Those who live like this very soon clash with others who want to live the same way. The inevitable consequence of this selfish concept of freedom is violence and the mutual destruction of freedom and life. On the contrary, we all must welcome every new life into the world, regardless of the circumstances, as if it were our own. Our lives and the lives of our unborn children are inseparable.

To claim the right to abortion and to recognize that right in law, means to attribute to human freedom a perverse and evil significance: that of an absolute power over others and against others. This is the death of true freedom.

I'll leave readers with this quote: "I've noticed that everybody that is for abortion has already been born." - Ronald Reagan, quoted in New York Times, September 22, 1980.
